The IEC 61850 standard has recently been extended with new Technical Reports dedicated to the formal specification of application functions and substation level systems, bringing significant benefits to power utilities: IEC TR 61850 7 6 Edition 2 and IEC TR 61850 90 30. In this context, MODSARUS BAP has been developed to support the definition of Basic Application Profiles (BAPs) and the specification of IEC 61850 application functions in accordance with the methodologies defined in these Technical Reports. Modsarus-BAP therefore acts as a Concept Definition Tool (CDT), enabling engineers to formalize application specifications. MODSARUS BAP addresses a shared need among power utilities worldwide: to structure, formalize and secure the specification phase of digital control, protection and automation systems, while reducing ambiguity and facilitating interoperability. |
MODSARUS-BAP provides assistance for the creation and validation of UML diagrams specifically adapted to the specification of IEC 61850 digital protection, automation and control functions and applications. These modeling capabilities enable utilities to formally describe the expected behaviour of PACS system as well as the interactions with other systems and actors involved, in clear, structured and unambiguous manner. |
The modeling environment supports the specification of data models compatible with the IEC 61850 standard, which is widely used for the engineering of substation automation and power system communication architectures. MODSARUS-BAP provides a dedicated module for importing IEC 61850 information data models into UML, using the code component files provided by the IEC (nsd, nsdoc…). This enables a consistent and standard-compliant specification of system functions, data models and information exchanges, in accordance with IEC 61850. |
MODSARUS-BAP supports the generation of structured Word documentation based on the IEC 61850-7-6 ed2 template, describing the applications and functions of digital protection, automation, and control systems, along with their associated information exchanges. It also supports the generation of ASD files in XML format, compliant with the SCL grammar and the extensions defined in the IEC 61850-6-100 namespace, as specified in IEC TR 61850-7-6 ed 2 and IEC TR 61850-90-30. These generated artefacts provide formalized specifications suitable for engineering documentation, interoperability analysis and system design validation. |
The MODSARUS Use Cases module supports the specification of business processes in accordance with the IEC 62559 use case methodology. It enables engineers to structure operational scenarios, identify system actors and document the expected behaviour of complex energy infrastructures. |
The MODSARUS Data Flow module supports the specification of data exchange interfaces based on enterprise data models or IEC Common Information Model (CIM). This module complements the capabilities of Enterprise Architect for generating XSD schemas, including domain-specific schema generation through EA Schema Composer. |
MODSARUS modules operate as extensions of Enterprise Architect, the modelling platform developed by Sparx Systems. Installation of Enterprise Architect is therefore a prerequisite. Enterprise Architect provides the core modelling environment including UML modelling, BPMN process modelling, requirements management, data modelling, XSD schema modelling and engineering documentation generation. |
