IEC 61850 Interoperability Testing Event

A Collaborative Workshop for IEC 61850 Interoperability

The IEC 61850 Interoperability (IOP) event brings together utilities, vendors and othrer industry stakeholders to validate interoperability between IEC 61850–compliant products under practical engineering and integration conditions.

IOP Preparation Based on Basic Application Profiles

The IOP preparation phase is now underway, and has begun with the definition of a set of Basic Application Profiles (BAPs), including applications such as: Bus reclosing, Voltage regulation, Single Phase Reclosing, Line protection and reclosing, interlocking, breaker failure, bus differential protection, load shedding… For each of these applications, the corresponding ASD (Application Specification Description) files have been created, several of them designed and modelled using Modsarus‑BAP, demonstrating its effectiveness in accelerating and structuring top‑down IEC 61850 engineering.

Hands-On Testing During the IOP Event

During the test week itself, participating vendors will connect and test their devices, gateways, simulators, test benches and software together with equipments from other manufacturers. These tests help confirm correct implementations, identify edge cases, and resolve issues that could impact system reliability in operational environments.

IOP testing is hands-on and collaborative. It focuses on practical interoperability—how devices actually behave when engineered and integrated alongside solutions from different vendors—while creating a structured environment to document findings, refine configurations, and drive continuous improvement across the IEC 61850 ecosystem.

An Opportunity for Witnesses and Industry Stakeholders

Witnesses attend the event to see interoperability in action, deepen their understanding of multi-vendor IEC 61850 integrations, and gain insight into common challenges and best practices. For utilities, system integrators, test laboratories, and other stakeholders, the IOP event offers a unique opportunity to learn from imprmentations, ask informed questions, and take home practical lessons that directly contribute to improved project outcomes.

Event Details

The IEC 61850 Interoperability Testing (IOP) event will take place in Utrecht, Netherlands, from 7 to 16 October 2026.
